Every once in a while, I love to volunteer my time and energy in a public art project. My last one was at the CIty of the Dead in Old Cairo, and this time at the Saudi German Hospital in Heliopolis.
Together with Sarah Hinds, an artist from Florida, we began preparing for the project for about 2 months before she arrived to Cairo. Sarah came to Egypt as one of the participants of the Global South Arts & Health Week taking place in Alexandria and Cairo for a week in September 2023, promoting the need for hospitals to encourage the art scene in their premises.
As part of the program, Sarah and I prepared for a mosaic mandala workshop at the Saudi German Hospital. At the reception lobby of the hospital, we welcomed all kinds of passers-by to join us in the creation of the mosaic mandalas: patients, visitors, children, doctors, nurses and janitors. Together we guided them step-by-step in the choice of color and design of the mosaic pieces, finally to complete 7 mandalas of different sizes.
We then took the mandalas to the studio to be grouted and prepared for hanging. The hospital was generous enough to provide us with a prime location to permanently display the mandalas on their walls for the public to enjoy!
